8 patterns for thinking about strong network biz models (thoughts-in-progress)

by · June 25, 2012

I was thinking about network effects, where every additional user you gain makes your entire service more valuable to everyone involved (increasing customer lock-in and widening the moat new competitors must cross to attack you).

It led me to these 8 business model patterns. Some network effect businesses use most of them. Others use just one or two. I don’t have a big conclusion to make, but I wanted to share my thinking in case it’s useful. I’ve had a couple useful breakthroughs by comparing my ideas against these 8 patterns to see what I might be able to change to reach a more defensible model.

Very interesting… I’d say if you have a few of these you’re well on your way to success. I enjoyed the perspective.
